dvd-copy-protection.jpgGiancarlo Bettini, CEO of SlySoft said “One could start feeling sorry for the poor movie industry guys, but in the end, it saves their jobs and ours. Actually, they could be grateful and show a little bit more appreciation. Beating AACS-LA’s protection was a challenge that we accepted passionately, since winning feels a lot better if the opponent is almost as strong as we are. However, I wonder when people will understand that more restrictions, pressure and protections that prevent things from working won’t generate more but less revenue. Microsoft’s revenue in the 90ies proves us right and even Apple recently released a DRM-free iTunes version.”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears’ music label filed a copyright infringement suit accusing the popular Internet gossip site PerezHilton.com of posting unauthorized recordings from her forthcoming album. The lawsuit came a day after Jive Records, part of Sony BMG Music Entertainment’s Zomba Label Group, announced that it would release “Blackout” two weeks earlier than originally planned because some tracks had been leaked online. Peter Anderson, a lawyer for Zomba, said that some of the material in question was removed from the site by its Internet service provider in early September when the label first raised the issue, but some disputed content remained posted.

In the last three months since Chicago Digital Post launched the RipGuard-MOD service, Montague said it has protected thousands of discs already for producers from coast to coast. “We’ve had the gamut of clients,” he said. For example, one of our clients in Michigan produces training DVDs. Another client, in Texas, produces custom waiting room video presentations for plastic surgeons. Photo-Proof DVDs for wedding photographers have also been copy-protected. Special events, such as children’s football games or dance recitals that are sold to parents, are also being copy-protected. A little bigger application, but one that has got a lot of press over the years, is the copy protection of screeners.

The latest effort which will stop hackers from copying high-definition movie DVDs has resulted in some inconvenience for early adopters of the technology: Some machines won’t play the latest discs. The movie and consumer-electronics industries have struggled to stop hackers from copying the newest generation of discs, despite early claims that the technology would outwit would-be pirates. Steve Feldstein, a spokesman for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, said both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players occasionally have needed updates to play new discs, and urged customers to monitor manufacturer Web sites that distribute the fixes, known as firmware updates. “When these sort of glitches happen, they’re resolved in…a week or two, once people realize they do need to use the firmware upgrades,” he said.

Amazon’s MP3 songs lack digital locks, the software that provides digital-rights management, or DRM. But you’re still limited in how you can use the music. The difference is that instead of using software for protection, the restrictions are in the user agreement, a contract you automatically agree to when you buy the songs. Amazon’s contract says you “may copy, store, transfer and burn the Digital Content” for personal use. But then it goes further and specifies restrictions, saying you “agree that you will not redistribute, transmit, assign, sell, broadcast, rent, modify, adapt, edit, sub-license or otherwise transfer or use the Digital Content.”
