Just how many times have you watched movies on tapes and wished that you could something about the quality of its video. You can’t possibly blame the video shop clerk if the movie just paused during the climax of your favorite movie. This is where your knight in shining armor comes in, in the form of an ocular disc, the HD DVD. HD is an acronym for high definition. The HD DVD is used to play high definition videos. It has been designed just like its predecessor, the DVD, but only better, i.e. to support high quality video files, which the former cannot.
The HD DVD is capable of supporting 3times the data that a standard DVD can support. The HD DVD was developed by the cooperation of the Japanese companies Toshiba and NES. The disc was renamed to HD DVD from its older designated name AOL (Advanced Optical Disc). The HD DVD has recently evolved to its new form, the HD DVD RW (Rewritable). The disc has support from the DVD Forum, majority of the Hollywood Studios namely Universal, New line and many others including software moguls like HP, Microsoft and Intel.
Some of the advantages of the HD DVD are as follows:
- Cost: Compared to its closest fierce competitor, the Blu-ray player, the HD DVD is much more cheaper. The player costs about $500 to $600 dollars, which is almost three times cheaper than that of its competitor, the Blu-ray player, though it is hard to point out any differences in their video qualities.
- Better sound and Picture: HD DVDs have the capabilities of a better sound and a picture output. Consider this, the picture quality of the HD DVD is about five times better than a standard DVD quality. With regards to its sound output, it makes use of Dolby TrueHD giving you a complete theatre experience.
- Scope for Improvement: The disc offers a lot of scope for improvements, since the player offers an Ethernet port on its reverse so as to update the player to run new formats as and when they are made available. Considering the consumer’s needs, Toshiba has announced that in the near future, the HD player will be able to support even standard DVDs.
A HD DVD works on the same principles as that of the DVD player, the main principal being that the electrical components in the DVD player takes the information that is fed by the sensor and converts it into a digital signal. The most important difference between the two is the picture quality and the storage capacity. HD DVD can bring new light to your traditional movie experience with its compabilities ranging from computers, gaming consoles like Xbox 360 and the Dual HD players (HD DVD and Blu-ray player). This may be the main reason why 241 movie titles have been released under the HD DVD format.

On the Internet, just a minute of Googling will get you to hundreds of free DVD burning software programs, but before you click on the ‘download’ button, you need to take some precautions because not all free software packages available offer the same utility. Downloading and using free DVD burning software may be the cheapest way of creating back-up copies of your favorite movies, TV serials, PC games, and home-videos, but since it is quite difficult to assess the quality and reliability of free software programs, you always need to address caution before clicking on the ‘download’ button.
To ensure that you are downloading the right freeware, the best you can do is read the specifications and features carefully. This will give you a fair idea as to what the freeware is all about and whether or not it will be able to satisfy your needs and requirements. Taking decisions based on promotional stuff written in large bold fonts may not be the right thing to do because what is highlighted may not always be true, especially in case of freeware downloads. Going by customer reviews may also not help because different people have different needs and perceptions, something that may lead to skewed reviews, not necessarily applicable to all.
If you want to get the right stuff the very first time, then try downloading from reputed websites that have a verifiable track record. You may only be able to download trial versions from these websites, but that should not act as a deterrent because it will still be better than downloading dubious stuff that may not have the required utilities and may even contain virus, worms, Trojans, spyware and other forms of malicious software. All these stuff can cause potential damage to other software systems installed on your computer and may even compromise your personal data stored on your computer. Hence, it is always better to download from reputed sites, especially if you are downloading freeware.
If you are looking for free stuff, then trial versions are certainly your best bet because they are not only free but are also more reliable and secure. Moreover, since trial versions are also available in abundance just like the free stuff, you will never run out of them. You can keep testing as long as you want by downloading different trail versions from time to time. And when you finally find the right stuff, you can think about buying a full version and having your peace of mind. That’s the way to go if you are looking for free DVD burning software downloads.

The CSS encryption code, Content Scrambling System was developed by Hollywood in order to curb piracy. The CSS is responsible for scrambling the data on a DVD and a special key is required so that it can be unscrambled. Using a 40-bit encryption, without the key the DVD’s cannot be played. DVD-RW or DVD-R discs are not capable of writing the key, and to remove the problem of DVD copying, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was put in to force. As we come to see it, there would be no such idea as a DVD copy. But this was not the case, the CSS proved to be ineffectual and the code cracked. Resulting in the release of a number of DVD copying softwares, and the possibility of a Copy Protected DVD was quite dim.
A number of companies have tried as well to create a copy protected DVD, for instance Macrovision has developed a form of protection against copying that is similar to the VHS tapes. This has been seen to have a number of issues when it comes to compatibility and was not universally applied. The CSS code is successfully decoded by a number of software programs. The DVD decrypter is a software that not only removes the protection but is designed so that users can copy certain parts of a movie etc. In addition it also allows the DVD to be copied on a DVD record able. Another software known as AnyDVD, besides removing the CSS encryption also allows the user to rip and burn.
The decryption CSS was developed by Jon Johansen so that the Linux OS could play DVD’s but this code also made it possible to decrypt a DVD movie, copy it to a hard drive and share. From then on there were a number of legal proceedings and unclear if copying DVD’s is illegal or not. Softwares like Nero, Roxio, Pinnacle Systems allow copying of non copy-protected DVD movies and do not include the DeCSS code so that copy-protected videos can be descrambled.
To create a copy of a copy protected DVD, majority users use third party softwares like Smart Ripper, DVD Decrypter etc, that rip the DVD’s. The DVD’s are descrambled and saved on the hard drive, and using a legitimate program the movie or data back to a DVD. This is done only so that users can have a backup of the DVD they have purchased for personal use. If done for any other reason, for sale or distribution it is piracy and the person can face a legal action.
