Tom Dillard, head of Special Collections says “There are a variety of challenges that we have in preserving paper documents, Paper documents have inherent vices, that is things built into them that threaten their longevity.” Tom also said that there are a tremendous challenge of keeping (the pests) out of libraries and special collections and throwing a book away is just like treating animals and children badly. There are some guidelines on how to keep documents and books in a better way. Always keep your books and papers away from direct heat or light. Do not use glue, tape, staples or rubber bands on the books. Some tips on how to preserve your photographs. Do not use ink pens to label photos. Do not keep your photos in magnetic photo albums. Always Wash hands before you handle photos. If possible handle the photos with cotton gloves, but if you don’t have it, handle by the edges only. Do not write on the photograph with an ordinary pen or pencil; get a soft pencil or a special photograph pen with permanent non-water-soluble ink.
